FAQ

General

Are all La Parisienne products biodegradable??

The laundry detergents, fabric softeners, cleaners and dishwasher tabs are all biodegradable, but bleach is not. However, when used, bleach breaks down into salt (sodium chloride) and water, which are not harmful to the environment. Also, these products are made with ingredients that have been approved by Environment Canada and comply with its environmental protection regulations.

Why were biodegradable plastics not used for La Parisienne biodegradable detergent bottles?

A plastic is considered biodegradable if it decomposes by the action of microorganisms when in contact with oxygen in the air. However, sending biodegradable plastic bottles to landfill sites would not be very environmental, since the volume of waste is too great for the plastic to be in contact with the elements needed for it to decompose.

For this reason, Lavo Inc. recommends reusing containers for various uses and recycling to promote a healthier environment.

Do la Parisienne products have an expiration date?

La Parisienne products do not have an expiration date. However, it should be noted that over a long period of time, they could lose some of their initial qualities. For long-lasting cleaning power, always keep your La Parisienne products in a dry place at a moderate temperature.

Do you test your products on animals?

No, we do not test any of our products on animals, neither in our manufacturing plant nor in our external laboratories.

Detergents

Do La Parisienne laundry detergents have an expiration date?

The detergents do not have an expiration date. However, it should be noted that over time, their appearance, colour, texture or fragrance may change, but they will not lose any of their effectiveness.

Are liquid detergents harmful to septic tanks?

Liquid detergents are not harmful to septic tanks when they are used to wash clothes. Pouring laundry detergent directly into a septic tank is not recommended.

How are HE detergents different from regular detergent?

In HE washing machines, the water level is lower during the wash and rinse cycles, so detergents must act differently in order to ensure an optimal level of cleaning. HE detergents must always be used in HE washers.

The deep-cleaning La Parisienne HE Laundry Detergents are made to produce only a small amount of suds and to dissolve quickly.

Using a traditional detergent in a top-loading or front-loading HE washer may create too many suds, which could affect the cleaning power or the washer’s tumbling action. It could also reduce the stain removal properties and the effectiveness of the rinse cycle and could cause the washer pump to overheat, which would increase the amount of water used and cancel out any water and energy savings the machine usually offers. Ultimately, it could negatively affect the way the machine works.

Fabric softeners

Do the La Parisienne fabric softeners have an expiration date?

The fabric softeners do not have an expiration date. However, it should be noted that over time, their appearance, colour, texture or fragrance may change, but they will not lose any of their effectiveness even if they look different.

I sometimes notice that my clothes have stains on them after using fabric softener. What can I do to prevent this?

First of all, make sure you always follow the instructions printed on the bottle. If you find stains on your clothes after having used fabric softener, check to make sure the fabric softener dispenser in your washing machine is clean. A dirty dispenser increases the chances of soiling your clothes. It is recommended that you add cold water to concentrated fabric softener in the dispenser to help eliminate build-up and ensure better distribution of the product in your wash. Stains are thus less likely.

Don't forget that La Parisienne fabric softeners must always be added to your wash in your machine's dispenser or during the rinse cycle. To remove stains caused by your fabric softener, simply wash your laundry again.

Are fabric softeners harmful to septic tanks?

Fabric softeners are not harmful to septic tanks when they are used to wash clothes. Pouring fabric softener directly into a septic tank is not recommended.

Bleach

Where does the name "Javel" come from?

Javel water takes its name from the ancient village of Javel, now just one of Paris' many neighbourhoods. In 1777, Count d'Artois founded the "Manufacture pour les Acides et Sels minéraux" in Javel, where the chemist Claude-Louis Berthollet worked. While searching for a method that would ease the work of washerwomen who had to whiten clothes by exposing them to sunlight, Berthollet came across a water solution that bleached cloth artificially, and he called it "eau de Javel," or Javel water.

Does La Parisienne bleach have an expiration date?

Bleach does not have an expiration date, but it will, over time, lose some of its cleaning power and effectiveness. To ensure a longer life for your bleach, store it in a dry place at a moderate temperature and use it within one year of purchase.

How can I prevent my clothes from yellowing after using bleach?

The premature yellowing of clothes due to the use of bleach can be attributed to two factors. First, certain fabrics are sensitive to bleach, especially synthetics. Secondly, using too much bleach may cause some fabrics to yellow. It is very important to follow the washing instructions on the garment care labels and the instructions on the bleach bottle.

Why does bleach have such a strong odour? Is it possible to create odourless bleach?

One of the main ingredients in bleach is sodium hypochlorite. This compound is somewhat volatile, which means it gives off vapours that we can smell. Over time, sodium hypochlorite breaks down causing the formation of chlorine which has a distinct odour. In order to make bleach odourless, we would have to remove the sodium hypochlorite, its main active ingredient, which would essentially eliminate the properties that create bleach. Another option is to use the La Parisienne 2 Chlorine-Free Whitening Agent.

Is bleach harmful to septic tanks?

Bleach is not harmful to septic tanks when it is used as instructed on the bottle’s label. Bleach may damage septic tanks if it is used in large quantities. Pouring bleach directly into a septic tank is not recommended.

Are the boxes the tabs come in made from recycled fibres?

Is the dye used in the tabs environmentally friendly?
