La Parisienne has signed the voluntary code for the optimization of containers, packaging and print materials, an Éco Entreprises Québec initiative.
Biodegradability is the ability of a substance to be broken down by the action of microorganisms. A biodegradable product is less likely to harm the environment.
Although, in absolute terms, this characteristic can apply to most known substances but according to an internationally recognized and accepted standard, a product is only considered biodegradable if it is likely to be broken down by the action of microorganisms under precise conditions and within a specific period of time. Certain internationally recognized organizations, such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD, have developed and published methods that determine whether a substance can be classified as biodegradable. Therefore, to be considered biodegradable, a substance must have been submitted to a universally recognized testing method and must refer to that method to substantiate its biodegradable status.
a) 301D Norms: An international standard that certifies that at least 60% of the product is biodegradable within 28 days or less. The method to test products replicates real-use conditions by evaluating their biodegradability in wastewater from sewers. If the product passes the 301D test, it is considered biodegradable.
Our products that comply with the OECD 301D test norms:
b) 302B Norms: An international standard that measure the tendency of a substance to biodegrade. The product undergoes several laboratory tests and is considered biodegradable if it passes all of them.
Our products that comply with the OECD 302B test norms:

EcoLogo is an internationally recognized certification symbol that belongs to Environment Canada. It tells consumers that the product is in the "environmentally preferable" category of Canadian products, based on a set of requirements and standards that aim at sustainability. It helps consumers and companies recognize sustainable products and reassures them of the product’s claims. EcoLogo is the most recognized multi-category environmental certification symbol in North America.

We chose to use completely recyclable containers for all the La Parisienne products, since we believe that this alternative reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills. The labels, caps, pouring spouts, plastic bottles, cardboard boxes and shipping cartons are all recyclable. However, before recycling the container, you can be even more helpful to the environment by using it for another purpose (a watering can for your plants, for example).
We opted for recyclable containers instead of using biodegradable plastic because they are better suited to the situation in Quebec and for use with La Parisienne products.
Here are some examples of how plastic is transformed when it is sent for recycling: shopping and garbage bags, containers and covers for non-food products, garden furniture, polar fleece clothing, toys, flower pots, urban furniture, fencing, rain boots, etc.
La Parisienne laundry detergents and fabric softeners are environmentally friendly because they are biodegradable and are effective in cold water. Washing with cold water reduces the energy used for each load and also lowers your electricity bill.
Since most of the La Parisienne products are bottled entirely at our Montreal-East factory in Quebec, fuel consumption is minimized when the products are transported to their various points of sale. The products bottled here include our laundry detergents, fabric softeners, bleaches and EcoRespect cleaning products.
Moreover, since our products are sold in the same province in which they were bottled, shipping distances are reduced, which also cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
The 2X concentrated formula of La Parisienne laundry detergents and fabric softeners means more loads in a smaller container.
By using new raw materials, with their inherent cleaning power or the synergy created by a specific pairing, or a combination of both, we have been able to obtain increased cleaning power, which in practical terms means using a smaller amount than the previous formula while retaining its proven effectiveness.
Our double-concentrated La Parisienne formulas allow you to use half the amount of product for one load compared to the regular formulas.
In addition to saving energy by using cold water, you use less detergent and fabric softener for each load!
Bleach is not biodegradable. However, when used, bleach breaks down into salt (sodium chloride) and water, which are not harmful to the environment. Also, these products are made with ingredients that have been approved by Environment Canada and comply with its environmental protection regulations.
